IN National Guard Headquarters Gets Makeover; Adj. Gen. Umbarger Retiring
The Indiana National Guard Headquarters held a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday to celebrate the completion of a nearly $40 million makeover to the building at 2002 S. Hold Road, Indianapolis.
Officials led a tour of the facility, which houses joint operations where responsibilities are delegated in the event of a disaster such as a flood or tornado. The renovations included remodeling 76,000 square feet of space and adding another 80,000 square feet. The project was 100 percent federally funded.
By moving operations such as personnel and recruiting to the location, the guard will be able to consolidate over 900 civilian and military personnel under one roof and end leases on three other facilities. The state expects to save approximately $450,000 annually.
“This facility is going to create a real environment that’s going to save tax payers money and create even greater efficiency for the best National Guard in the country,” stated Governor Mike Pence, who spoke at the event.
The celebration was about more than just the building, though. It marked a new beginning for operations and the expanded facility, but also the end of a career for Adjutant General Martin Umbarger, who will step down after more than four decades of service.
Umbarger enlisted in the guard in 1969. Over his 45 years of service he moved up in rank, including taking charge of almost 16,000 personnel for the past 11 years.
“Governor Kernan asked me to be his adjutant general. Governor Daniels asked me to remain on and Governor Pence asked,” said Umbarger. “It’s been a true honor and a privilege.”
