Milford Town Park Needs Lifeguards, Concessions
Milford Town Council had its monthly meeting Monday evening to discuss a wide range of issues from an overall Milford town study to the hiring of lifeguards and concessionaires at the town park.
The public input session first heard from Trisha Gall, Milford Lions Club representative, who informed the council the Lions are accepting donations toward Milford Fest 2015, to be held Saturday, May 23, Memorial Day weekend. Those looking for donation forms may contact Joellen Free, town clerk, at (574) 658-4519, or stop by town hall, 121 S. Main St. Donors may also call Gall at (574) 344-7811.
Next, the council heard from architect Timothy Wall and landscape architect Michael Reese of Troyer Group. Reese gave a quote of $12,700 for a comprehensive town study. Due to the absence of council member Dan Cochran, the council chose to table the vote until next council meeting, May 11. The council will also seek feedback from the redevelopment commission in the interim.
Milford Fire Chief Todd Haines gave his departmental report Monday. The town’s tornado warning siren had failed to sound during a statewide preparedness drill. The department was testing the siren’s remote capability, so it may be activated from Warsaw. The siren did go off on the second test, Haines reported.
Haines is also seeking the names of deceased Milford firefighters, so they might be honored with a marker at the Milford Cemetery.
Town Marshal Rich Miotto reported the police department has four reserve deputies who have completed preliminary testing. He assured the council applicants are thoroughly screened and tested. He expects they may be sworn in as early as the next council meeting.
During utilities and park reports the council carried two motions. The first allows $1,500 to repair the roof of the town park concessions stand and $675 to pay for barricades in the park’s parking lot.
The second motion allows $6,500 from the depreciation fund for a water rate study conducted by Umbaugh and Associates.
Utilities Superintendent Randy Veach also reported the park needs lifeguards and someone to run the concessions stand. Lifeguards will be paid at least $8 per hour. Applicants may inquire further at town hall.
Finally, the council carried a motion to allow $13,551.80 to remodel Milford’s community building. The work will be done by Dolls Remodelling Center of Milford. Free reported the building is doing “very well” and the cost will not come from tax dollars. Work will begin July as the building is very busy for the next couple months.
