Mary K. Miller
Mary K. Miller, 83, a Columbia City resident, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
She was born April 23, 1931, in South Whitley, the daughter of Dwight and Martha (Keiser) Hathaway. She graduated from South Whitley High School in 1949 and continued her education at Ball State Teachers College. She proudly played trombone in the high school band and college band.
On April 15, 1951, she was united in marriage to Ronald Eugene Miller. With the exception of eight years in Fort Wayne, they made their home in South Whitley and Columbia City areas. Miller died April 26, 2001.
She was a member and organist of Living Water Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake. Formerly a member and organist at Zion Lutheran Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church, both of Columbia City, she continued to be active in the Ladies Aide Society at Zion. Mary also enjoyed her involvement with VBS and the puppet ministry. While a resident in Fort Wayne, she was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Mary marched with the Fort Wayne Community Band and Second Time Arounders Band in the Three Rivers Festival Parade until age 70.
Surviving relatives include five children: Virginia Butz, Fort Wayne; Mark Miller, San Francisco, Calif.; Gloria Bassett, Fort Wayne; Lucia (Everette) Sroufe, South Whitley; and Michael Miller, South Whitley; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother: Don Hathaway, Plymouth.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, at Zion Lutheran Church, 101 E. North St., Columbia City with visitation after 10 a.m. The burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will also be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
