Robert H. Boggs
Robert H. Boggs, 90, of Columbia City, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, April 5, 2015.
He was born Feb. 21, 1925, in Allen County, a son of Ozie and Mabel (Goheen) Boggs. As a second grader, his family moved to the Etna area in northern Whitley County. He graduated from Larwill High School.
On Aug. 8, 1944, he was inducted in the United States Army, serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre where he was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. His honorable discharge was on Aug. 22, 1945.
On Aug. 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to Doris Mae Deeter. In 1956 they moved to Warsaw until 1970 when they moved to their home in Westgate. In October 1991, they moved to their present home.
A farmer and truck driver for 40 years, he loved driving semi and traveled to every state in the continental United States during his career. He retired in August 1991 and spent his retirement working for Schrader Real Estate and Auction, gardening and woodworking. He was actively involved with First Church of God.
Surviving relatives include his wife of nearly 69 years: Doris; four children: Barbara Kay (David) Rink, Kokomo; Gary A. (Rachel) Boggs, Columbia City; Marcia (Timothy) Miller, Uniontown, Ohio; Rhonda (Philip) DeLong, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren: Matthew Rink, Christina Rink, Heather Jernigan, Amanda Baker, Jared Boggs, Tyler Miller, Carter Miller, Abigail Miller, Spencer DeLong and Alison DeLong; three great-grandchildren: Makenzie Rink, Jack Jernigan and Luke Jernigan; and a sister: Hilda Hendrickson, Aurora Ill.
A sister, Doris Hontz, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 10, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at the funeral home.
The burial will be in South Park Cemetery with military honors presented by Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.
Preferred memorials are to First Church of God for youth activities.
