Warriors Edge Apaches In Extras
WABASH – Wawasee manufactured a run in the eighth inning Wednesday, enough to beat the host Wabash Apaches, 9-8, in varsity baseball.
Wawasee held a 6-3 lead on Wabash after three innings, but found itself down 8-7 in the seventh before tying the game.
Gage Reinhard had a huge game, collecting four hits, driving in two and stealing two bases to lead the Warriors, now 2-0 on the season. Nate Prescott added three hits, a run and an RBI and Harrison Shortill reached base five times, four via the walk.
Drew Anderson added a two-run double and stole two bases for the Warriors, which pounded out 13 hits in the game.
Andrew Wright got the win for Wawasee, working 4.2 innings of relief, allowing just five hits in that span.
Kyle Kelsheimer had two hits and scored three runs and Jordan Burnsworth added a double, homer and three RBIs to lead the Apaches in its season opener.
Wawasee is scheduled to play tonight at Manchester.
The Wawasee ‘C’ team opened up its 2015 campaign with a 16-6 loss at Concord. Statistics for Wawasee were not provided.
“We had both positives and negatives for our first game,” stated Wawasee ‘C’ team coach Taylor Burkhart. “Unfortunately, we made some crucial fielding errors and lost our focus. We know what we need to work on for our next game and we will continue to work hard to improve.”
The ‘C’ team next play April 13 at Central Noble.
