Tigers Pop Penn In Track Opener
MISHAWAKA – Two of the area’s top boys track programs squared off at Penn Tuesday night.
Once again, when the dust had cleared, Warsaw had gotten the best of the Kingsmen.
The Tigers won 11 events on the evening to top host Penn 82-50 in the season opener for coach Matt Thacker’s talented team.
Warsaw edged past Penn 77-76 last year to claim the South Bend St. Joseph Regional championship, the second straight regional title and third in the last four years for the Tigers.
We found out where we need to improve as far as particular events are concerned, but I was very happy with the effort overall,” said Warsaw coach Matt Thacker.
“Plus, we also are starting to see glimpses of our younger guys and their potential. Overall it was nice to compete against someone other than ourselves in a practice situation.”
Owen Glogovsky won a pair of races to lead the way for the winners. Glogovsky took first in both the 1,600 (4:35) and 3,200 (10:32) events for Warsaw.
The Tigers, who graduated a large and strong senior class from last year’s team which won conference, sectional and regional titles, also got wins on the track from Riley Rhoades in the 400 (51.0), Ross Armey in the 300 hurdles (41.39) and Daniel Messenger in the 800 (2:07).
Picking up wins in field events action for Warsaw were Andy Scheidt in the discus (151-05), Brock Riley in the high jump (6-0), Rashaan Jackson in the long jump (21-0) and Ben Plummer in the shot put (47-6).
The Tigers also won a pair of relay events in the meet. The 4 X 100 relay team of Armey, Nick Light, Lucas Cone and Brandon Reinholt won in a time of 44.3. The team of Andrew Mevis, D’Andre Street, Rhoades and Landan Perry won the 4 X 400 event with a time of 3:33.01.
Dylan Childers collected a pair of second-place finishes for Warsaw in the win. Childers was second in both the discus and shot put events. Also placing second were Reinholt in the 100, Caleb Klusman in the 110 hurdles, Messenger in the 1,600, Street in the 400 and Tommy Hickerson in the long jump.
Warsaw (1-0) is off until hosting Goshen and Elkhart Memorial on April 16 in the Northern Lakes Conference opener.
