The Waterloo Fire Department was called to Francis Thomson Memorial Park around 5 p.m. Sunday, near downtown Waterloo. It took approximately an hour to get the fire under control due to high winds.
No one was hurt, however there was a large amount of damage to the wooden structures on the playground. Firefighters suspected arson and began investigating.
Oberholtzer stated the two started a fire in a pit made of recycled tire material, using leaves and shredded tire material from the playground. The fire quickly got out of control, and the boys ran off scared. A witness saw one of the boys and was able to identify him to police.
The case will be forwarded to the DeKalb County Juvenile Court. Both boys have been released to their parents.
