Driver Arrested In Nappanee Crash That Injured 2-Month-Old
Wanda Mae Schlemmer, 39, South Bend, has been arrested and incarcerated at the Elkhart County Correctional Facility. She has been preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.
The accident occurred at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Market and Elm streets, Nappanee. Two-month-old Cora Rouch suffered head injuries and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital and later flown to Riley’s Children Hospital.
Schlemmer was given a preliminary drug test, in which she tested positive for cocaine as well as marijuana.
Schlemmer was operating a 1999 Jeep SUV westbound on Market Street in Nappanee Tuesday, when she had an apparent seizure, causing her vehicle to accelerate into the intersection of Market and Elm streets. Her vehicle struck the rear passenger side of a vehicle driven Trisha Rouch, 34, Nappanee. The collision caused serious bodily injuries to Rouch’s two-month old child, Cora Rouch.
After the initial collision, Schlemmer’s vehicle continued and came to rest after striking a Key Bank teller window and two parked vehicles.
Investigators with the Elkhart County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team confirm Cora Rouch was properly restrained in a child seat at the time of impact.
Schlemmer suffered a sprained ankle and soreness throughout her body and her three passengers were uninjured.
Schlemmer’s vehicle was found to contain marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a controlled substance. The investigation is ongoing.
