WCS Recognizes Student, Notes Upcoming Speakers
The Warsaw Community School Board of Trustees met Monday evening for a short, to-the-point monthly regular board meeting. The meeting offered a chance for recognition of several individuals including students, staff and community members.
Among those recognized was Lori Davila, a Washington fourth grader student whose extraordinary efforts saved her grandmother’s life. Davila shared her story with the board, explaining that her grandmother had entered her room choking. Though her mother attempted to help the woman, it was Lori Davila who was able to perform the Heimlich maneuver successfully.
Lori earned CPR certification at Washington STEM Academy from instructors Tony Doyle, Cody Manges and Darrell Sopher of Multi-Township EMS. Warsaw Community School Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert noted his gratitude to the gentleman for donating their time and efforts to instruct students in lifesaving measures.
In other news, during the monthly superintendent’s report, Dr. David Hoffert announced an exciting upcoming speaker at WCS. Retired NASA Astronaut and U.S. Air Force Colonel Kevin A. Ford will present a talk entitled “Follow Your Dreams” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at the Warsaw Community High School Performing Arts Center. Colonel Ford is a native of Indiana and a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, with a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering.
All fourth through sixth grade WCS students will attend Colonel Ford’s daytime lectures. The general public is invited to attend the evening event, which is free of charge. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for open seating. No tickets are required. The Warsaw Community Schools Inquiry Learning Lab will be onsite and open for tours. Student exhibits, classroom projects, and science-related club activities will be on display. Colonel Ford’s presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.
