Warsaw Common Council Approves Appropriation Of Parkview Funds
Warsaw Common Council held the first and second reading of Ordinance 2015-03-01, approving an additional appropriation of funds provided by Parkview Health, Monday night. These funds go toward providing a new surface for the road stretching from Husky Trail to Mariners Drive.
The amount of $600,000 was approved unanimously. Warsaw City Planner Jeremy Skinner stated he would like to bid the project by July, start construction by August and complete the road by October or November. “Very good for the citizens of Warsaw,” remarked council member Charlie Smith.
The council also discussed Ordinance 2015-03-02, establishing a Hazardous Material Response Fund for the Warsaw Fire Department, as well as authorize them to impose a charge on a person responsible for a hazardous materials emergency. The fire department would be able to use the fund to pay for necessary equipment for hazardous material situations. The fire department currently pays for such items out of the equipment fund.
In regard to Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Brubaker, who wrote the proposed ordinance but was not in attendance at the meeting, council member Jeff Grose stated, “He is playing within state law. I see no reason why we shouldn’t approve it.”
Several members of the council appeared to have questions in regards to necessity of the fund, to which Mayor Joe Thallemer proposed, “If we pass this on first reading I suggest we do not have a second reading so that you have time to get your questions together.” The first reading passed, and the second reading was tabled for next month.
When it was time for questions and coments from visitors, Mike Ragan remarked on the amount of traffic that backs up on Parker Street due to the duration of the red lights at the street’s intersection with Center Street. Seemingly everyone in attendance nodded in agreement of Ragan’s complaint, Smith stated “That is a mess down there.” Skinner noted there aren’t really many options for fixing the problem except for having a representative from the Indiana Department of Transportation actually change the duration settings of the lights at the intersection.
Among those in attendance at the meeting were several students from Grose’s State and Local Politics class he teaches at Warsaw Community High School.
