Edith I. Cayot
Edith Irene Cayot, 91, of Columbia City, passed away at 5:06 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at The Towne House in Fort Wayne. Born on Feb. 4, 1924 in Washington Township of Whitley County, she was the daughter of Aloysius J. and Rosa (Eker) Nix.
She was raised in Washington Township and graduated from Washington Township High School with the Class of 1942 where she was honored to be the Valedictorian of the Class. On May 8, 1948, she married Harold L. Cayot at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. After her marriage she and her husband resided in Fort Wayne for two years.
In 1950 she moved back Washington Twp. and they raised all 6 children in the same home she continued to reside in until 2 months prior to her passing away. She first worked 8 years at General Electric, Fort Wayne, then at the 9 & 14 Restaurant and lastly was a Teacher’s Aide at Washington Center School for 11 years. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Nix Settlement and the Harmony Club and Rosary Sodality, Willing 20 Home Extension Club and Silver Striders.
Survivors include her children, Thomas M. Cayot of Euless, TX, Cheryl A. (Thomas) Quandt, Fort Wayne, Janel M. (Matthew) Sprunger, Fort Wayne, Marcia R. (Phil) Wright, Fort Wayne, Patricia L. (Mike DeMarco) Cayot, Houston, Texas, and Dennis D. (Julie) Cayot, Louisville, Ky; brother, Adolph “Bud” Nix of Fort Wayne; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold L. Cayot; three sisters, Helen Nix, Marcella Bugert and Agnes Starost; 6 brothers, Richard, Sylvester, Raymond, Eugene, Kenneth and Alfred Nix.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 22, with Prayer Vigil Service starting at 1:30 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
Funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, March 23, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Nix Settlement with Father Dale Bauman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given in Mrs. Cayot’s memory to Masses to St. Catherine’s Catholic Church or Parkview Home Health Care & Hospice.
