Mother-Daughter Team Arrested For Mail Theft
Police have arrested Barbara Duncan, 53, and her daughter Amber Morgan, 28, in connection with mail thefts from as many as 25 Indiana counties. The two were found in a Seymour, IN, motel with several bags of mail ranging from IDs to bank letters to credit cards and more.
Police from Winamac to Evansville had been getting complaints of someone stealing mail for months. One resident was able to describe a car, which was later found abandoned. However, there was a motel receipt inside which led them to the suspects.
Officers say the pair had a laptop and were using information from the mail to attempt to access bank accounts. They already had several credit cards in other peoples’ names they were using to make purchases.
One victim reported seeing one of the women ripping open mail, then throwing an empty envelope and other items from her car as she drove away. Jackson County Sheriff Michael Carothers even found his brother’s stolen mail in with the evidence collected.
As investigators continue to sort through the mail, they will identify victims and notify other police departments.
