Office of Congressman Marlin Stutzman
U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman issued this statement following his vote in support of H.R. 529 – To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to improve 529 plans sponsored by Rep. Lynn Jenkins. The bill passed 401-20.
“As a father of two who invests in a 529 savings plan, I know how hard it is to put money aside to keep up with the soaring costs of a college education. Working parents all over the country are struggling to do the same and wondering how they’ll be able to afford college tuition when their kids head off to college. Last month I was alarmed to hear that President Obama was planning to tax 529 savings plans. This is a bad idea and I am happy to see he has since backed down.”
“Today, we in the House passed important legislation to protect, modernize, and expand 529 savings accounts, making it easier and not harder, for more moms and dads to save for their kids’ higher education needs. I strongly believe that a good education serves as the foundation to achieving success and I am proud to have supported a bill that will expand opportunities and allow more Americans to pursue their dreams.”
