Edwards Wins Frosh POTW Honors Again
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue’s Vince Edwards has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Edwards becomes the first player in school history to win three Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades. The award dates to the 2010-11 season.
Edwards helped the Boilermakers to a 2-0 record with wins over Rutgers (61-51) and Nebraska (66-54). Purdue enters Thursday’s game at Indiana with a 17-9 overall record and a 9-4 mark in the Big Ten standings.
In the win over Rutgers, Edwards scored seven points with one assist and one block in 21 minutes. He then added 15 points with five rebounds, three assists and one block in 27 minutes in Sunday’s win over Nebraska. The 15 points were his most since scoring 16 against Michigan in the second game of the Big Ten season. In games that Edwards has led the team in scoring, the Boilermakers are 6-0 and he has recorded nine double-figure scoring games this year (7-2 record).
During the week, Edwards averaged 11.0 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 2.0 APG and 1.0 BPG while shooting 52.9 percent from the field (9-of-17) and 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from three-point range.
He also won the award on Nov. 17 after averaging 19.5 PPG and 8.0 RPG in wins over Samford and IUPUI to start the season, and Jan. 6, after averaging 12.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 2.5 APG in wins over Minnesota and Michigan.
Edwards is averaging 9.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG and leads the team in assists with 69 (2.7 APG). He is the only freshman in America to average at least 9.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 2.5 APG while shooting over 50.0 percent from the field.
Edwards and his teammates will travel to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers on Thursday night, tipping off at 7 PM (ET). The game will be televised by ESPN.
