UPDATE: According to a release from the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the original crash occurred when a car rear-ended a semi on US 30. The car then turned into another semi in the other lane of traffic and slid into the guardrail. While that was happening, another car became lodged underneath the second semi. From there, the slick road conditions caused a chain reaction or collisions. A total of 31 vehicles were involved and the road was closed for 3.5 hours. Four individuals were transported to Parkview Whitley Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Another multi-vehicle crash involving upwards of 20 vehicles has been reported on westbound US 30 near West Lincolnway, west of Columbia City.

Injuries and entrapment have been reported and motorists are urged to avoid the area all together.
