IU Installs First Ever ‘Diplomat In Residence’
Gareth Evans, foreign minister of Australia from 1988 to 1996, will serve as the first ever Distinguished Diplomat in Residence at Indiana University’s School of Global and International Studies.
Evans has been chancellor of Australian National University since 2010. He was named a “Top 100 Global Thinker” by Foreign Policy magazine in 2011 and led the International Crisis Group in Brussels from 2000-2009. During his 21 years in Australian politics, he was leader of the government in the Senate and deputy leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives.
“I am extremely pleased that our students and scholars will have the opportunity to study and work with Gareth Evans, who is truly one of the most important voices in foreign policy today,” said IU president Michael A. McRobbie. “I have no doubt students at our new School of Global and International Studies will greatly benefit from his unique perspective and experiences.”
Evans will teach an advanced level seminar on diplomacy, participate in an international conference on the responsibility to protect and meet with students and faculty.
