Bethel Holds Off Goshen
MISHAWAKA – After the announcement that Clay Yeo and Matt Schauss earned back-to-back NAIA National Player of the Week awards, it was Zach Miller’s turn to shine as the senior poured in 24 points guiding No. 7 Bethel College to an 83-78 men’s basketball victory over Goshen College.
The 6-1 guard connected on 6-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc to go along with four rebounds and one block and helped give Coach Mike Lightfoot his 23rd 20-win season in this 28th season at the help.
Yeo added 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Schauss had a near triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.
Bethel (20-3) would start the contest out going up by five with a three from Yeo and a bucket from Schauss, but Goshen would climb right back to make it a one-point game moments later at 12-11.
The Maple Leafs would take their first lead of the night (20-18) on a basket from Billy Geschke, but Miller responded with a triple at the other end to go back on top 21-20. The game would remain a one possession contest before Goshen eventually tied the score for the sixth time (26-26) with 5:48 left in the opening half before Bethel made their move.
Schauss would get a layup followed by eight-straight points from Miller and a three-pointer from Chris Mitchell to push the Pilot lead to 11 (39-28) just moments before halftime.
The Maple Leafs were able to collect another bucket going into the locker room as Bethel led 39-30. Bethel shot 56 percent in the first 20 minutes on 14-of-25 shooting while Goshen hit 41 percent on 13-of-32 attempts.
Ryan Wassink started out the final half with a trey of his own to give Bethel a 12-point cushion, but Goshen would slowly creep back into the game over the course the next 13 minutes. The Wassink triple would be only one of three baskets Bethel would namage to hit from downtown in the final half.
With 7:13 remaining, Goshen’s Dominique Bolden drilled a basket to pull the Leafs to within just a single point at 55-54, but would never claim the lead late.
For the game, Bethel shot 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc. The Maple Leafs converted on 49 percent of their shots, but only hit 5-of-19 (26 percent) from three-point range.
The win places Bethel in a two-way tie for second place in the Crossroads League with University of Saint Francis as both schools boast an 8-3 record.
The Pilots continue its homestand when Spring Arbor University visits Saturday.
