Franklin Indiana Chosen For International Google Summit
The city of Franklin, Indiana, has been chosen to host an international Google summit in April. Students and the school’s commitment to technology have been credited with helping bring the town and school to Google’s attention.
At Franklin Community High School, using technology to create lessons is a daily routine. Every student has a Google Chromebook, purchased by the Franklin Redevelopment Commission, and every class uses Google apps in its studies.
The Google Apps for Education conference will take place in multiple cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Sydney Australia and Christchurch New Zealand. Hundreds of people are expected to attend, including educators, Google employees and international speakers.
FCHS technology director Matt Sprout applied to host the summit after attending a similar conference in Chicago. Some concerns were raised by Google due to the town’s small size, such as proximity to an international airport, hotels and restaurants in the area and whether or not it could support that many people attending. Sprout was prepared, however, and able to sell the execs.
“It’s going to be a great opportunity for our community, our citizens and our businesses – places to eat, places to stay, entertainment, shopping,” said Franklin mayor Joe McGuinness. “This is one of those things we can put on our resume.”
In addition to the city’s economic benefits, students will be able to show off their work by giving presentations at the summit as well.
