Trojans Sprint Past Cavaliers
BOURBON – There was no Trent Elliott to save Culver this time.
Triton, with the memory of the 2014 sectional loss still in the back of their minds, didn’t have any trouble with Culver Friday night in a 57-34 win at the Trojan Trench.
The Cavaliers didn’t have anyone set to drop 40 points on Triton like Elliott did last March, and couldn’t get to that number as a unit against a very confident and loose Trojan side. While Triton lead just 13-8 after the first quarter, quick hands and a lot of pressure defense allowed the Trojans to pull away.
Triton forced Culver into 14 turnovers in the first half, which were converted into 21 of its 33 first-half points. For the game, Culver gave away 22 possessions to just eight for Triton.
Austin Sellers also played one of his better games for Triton, scoring 16 of his game-high 20 points in the first half. Sellers didn’t miss a field goal until the third quarter and added four rebounds and three steals to his solid performance.
“He played with confidence tonight,” Triton head coach Jason Groves said of Sellers. “He got to the basket and got some buckets. He used his length and with his athleticism, he got to the basket a lot.”
Jordan Anderson also had a very solid night, finishing with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Anderson’s energy, which had him attacking the rim and sliding across the floor after loose balls, lit the fuse for the Trojans, now 7-5 overall and 3-0 in the Northern State Conference.
About the only thing that went wrong for the Trojans Friday night was a nasty ankle injury to forward Joey Corder. The injury occurred in the third quarter as Triton was well ahead. As Corder sailed to the basket for a layup attempt, the senior landed on a Culver foot on the way down and rolled his ankle, which only added insult to the other ankle he rolled earlier in the game.
Corder left the arena on crutches, and his status is unknown as Triton heads into the Bi-County Tournament next week.
“People are going to have to step up, that’s for sure,” Groves said. Corder finished with 10 points, eight boards and three steals, as well as a thunderous dunk in the second quarter that highlighted Triton’s huge frame. “Our numbers aren’t big anyways, so losing a guy like Joey is difficult. We have to be smart about what to do with the players. Hopefully, we’ll get some good news tonight. I’m optimistic.”
Culver (2-9, 0-3 NSC) had Preston Hansel lead the Cavs with nine points, four boards and three steals. Josh Krsek added eight points and six rebounds.
Culver will host Argos and Triton will visit LaVille Tuesday in first-round action in the Bi-County Tournament. John Glenn hosts Bremen and Oregon-Davis welcomes in New Prairie also on Tuesday as bracket play begins for the tournament that culminates Saturday at LaVille.
