Warrior Gymnasts Open With Win
ANGOLA – The 2015 season opener for Wawasee was a sweet one Tuesday night, winners over Angola by a count of 93.775-78.85.
Reagan Atwood had a tremendous freshman debut for Wawasee, leading the meet in vault (8.95), beam (8.4), floor (8.45) and was second on bars with a 7.725. Combined, Atwood’s 33.25 all-around score was by far the top score of the meet, and the only all-around total for the Lady Warriors.
Wawasee’s Taylor Busse was the top bars competitor in the meet with a 7.975 score while teammate Haleigh Smarr was third on bars at 7.05.
Ashleigh Frecker was third on vault at 8.6, Meghan Beer second on beam at 6.625 and Smarr was second on floor with a 7.7.
Angola’s Karlie Hutchins paced the hosts with a second-place score on vault at 8.8 and third-place on floor at 7.35.
The dual was the first for Wawasee, which had only performed at the LaPorte Pairs in mid-December coming into the night. Weather forced Wawasee out of Jan. 3’s Blazer Invite in Elkhart.
“It was nice to get the first dual meet under our belts,” noted Wawasee assistant coach Sarah Wegener. “We have quite a few new people on the team so we didn’t know what to expect going in.
“We had some younger girls really step up and do well today,” Wegener continued. “We know we have a lot to work on, but getting this first meet under our belts gives us something to improve upon.”
Wawasee (1-0) will return to action Thursday at Fort Wayne Carroll.
