South Bend Man Arrested For Murder Of Former Warsaw Resident
South Bend police have arrested Roy Lee Walker, 49, on charges of murder, attempted murder and residential entry after he allegedly broke into several neighboring apartments at a complex on E. Calvert Street shooting and killing Robert Duke, 46, and Michelle Blankenship, 43, formerly of Warsaw.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday night after a call was received about a naked man armed with a handgun attempting to shoot a third neighbor, but the weapon did not fire. That neighbor escaped unharmed.
Upon investigation, police discovered Blankenship’s vehicle had been taken. Shortly thereafter, the same vehicle was involved in a crash at St. Joseph and Chippewa streets, with the driver, Walker, fleeing the scene. Police were able to find and apprehend him, taking him to the hospital.
Court documents allege that Walker told police while at the hospital “I did some crazy things. I am ready to go so take me. I just want some peace.”
Two South Bend police officers were also injured while responding to the call, requiring medical attention.
