Elkhart County 4-H Beekeeping Club To Meet
By STHELE GREYBAR
Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development, Purdue Extension Elkhart County
The Elkhart County 4-H Beekeeping Club plans to hold its first meeting of the year at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19 at Peoples Bible Church, located at 68074 U.S. 33, Goshen. The club is beginning its eleventh year as a county 4-H club, and is now under new leadership. Calendars with additional dates will be handed out at the meeting.
4-H Beekeeping helps youth learn not only about managing honeybees, but acquiring skills that will help them later in life, such as time management and responsibility. Many new exciting educational opportunities are to be explored. Members will get the chance to learn the science behind honeybees by getting to work with colonies in the field, practicing management techniques with an experienced beekeeper, and tasting raw honey.
Because of the unique nature of beekeeping, this project is organized as a county club, which means youth need to enroll in the 4-H Beekeeping Club with the project Beekeeping in order to take this project.
Enrollment is open to youth third grade through high school, online at https://in.4honline.com until Thursday, Jan. 15. All enrollments must be completed by the Thursday, Jan. 15 deadline if the youth wishes to display his project at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.
Carol Kauffman, along with Sammy and Katrina Mohler, are the club’s new organizational leaders. Come see what all the buzz is about.
