Since this week is Christmas I thought it appropriate to go a different direction with the column than normal. Each week I have a specific topic and title. However, there is a general title for this column called Passion, Purpose and Profit. I would like to expand on each one of the words in the title and how it relates to Christmas.
Passion plays a major role in Christmas. No, I am not talking about those who go Black Friday shopping and knock each other down trying to get some must have gift they are passionate about. The passion I speak of is the passion of giving. We see people give to others now, like no other time of year.
Giving may simply be holding the door open for others with a smile and saying Merry Christmas. It may be giving that special gift to a life-long friend or loved one whether they need it or not. It may be bringing gifts and groceries to a family experiencing great need.
People give not only to family and friends, but to complete strangers. They give to rich and poor alike. They give to those who are in great need and those who don’t have need for anything. During this time of year there is definitely a spirit of giving.
Through the passion of giving we see during this time of year reveals I see our true purpose for being. I believe the main, over-arching purpose each of us has on earth is to make a positive difference in the lives of others. We make a difference by bringing joy, comfort and peace to those around us in our personal and professional lives.
When we hold the door open for someone — we are making a difference. When we get just the right gift for a loved one — we are making a difference. When we meet the needs of those who are struggling— we are making a difference. When we take the time to listen to a co-worker who is struggling with a personal issue — we are making a difference. Don’t ever discount the difference you make, no matter how small it may seem.
Most of may think the word “profit” only means one thing during this time of year — cash registers ringing up sales all over the country. It is not the profit I am thinking about. The profit I am speaking about is how the lives of others profit when we passionately give and live out our purpose. It’s not the things, or gifts, they receive which profit their lives, but rather their lives become richer knowing someone truly cares.
I see so many following passion, purpose and profit during this time of year. Don’t let it only be during Christmas when we act this way, but let it be a lifestyle. Keep alive your passion to give. Always look to fulfill your purpose and make a positive difference in the lives of those around you. As you do this, don’t look for anything in return. Do it solely for the profit of others.
One final thought. There is no greater example of someone living out passion, purpose and profit than the One for whom this holiday is named — Christ. Christ came with a fervent passion to give. He came to fulfill His purpose, which is to positively change the lives of people. He did it all for the profit of others. Merry Christmas!
