Gary Man Talked Down from Bridge by ISP
A man threatening to jump off a bridge over Interstate 80/94 in Gary, IN, finally came down from the edge at about 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, after police negotiators talked to him for about an hour and 40 minutes.
Indiana State Police closed both the east and westbound lanes of the interstate highway while officers tried to get the man to safety, diverting traffic onto other roads. Semi trailers were used to help to block the lanes, and some motorists experienced long delays.
No information has been released as to why the man was threatening suicide or his identity. He was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Dyer, IN, for evaluation. An ambulance had been waiting nearby to assist if needed, but no injuries were reported.
