“Clifford the Big Red Dog” Author Norman Bridwell Passed Away
KOKOMO – Children’s author Norman Bridwell, creator of the “Clifford the Big Red Dog” books, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, at the age of 86. He was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Kokomo, IN. He graduated from Kokomo High School and Herron School of Art in Indianapolis.
Bridwell’s first Clifford story was turned down by nine publishers before being accepted by Scholastic in 1963. Since then, there have been more than 150 titles published including two that have yet to be released that will appear in 2015.
Bridwell originally planned to call Clifford “Tiny”, but his wife suggested he change the name to Clifford after her childhood imaginary friend. The character Emily Elizabeth from the series is named after their daughter.
In an interview last month with the Kokomo Tribune, Bridwell said he didn’t understand why his books became famous. He just hoped they made children laugh and enjoy reading. Many who knew him described him as soft-spoken, kind-hearted and humble.
Norman Bridwell is survived by his wife, Norma, their children Emily Elizabeth and Timothy and three grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for the summer of 2015.
