Kellen Hubert, Teacher, Charged with Child Seduction
A Southern Indiana teacher was charged Sunday Dec. 14 with child seduction, a level five felony, stemming from a sexual relationship with a 16 year old student.
Kellen Hubert, 28, of New Albany, reportedly engaged in consensual sex acts with the teen on multiple occasions in November according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Harrison county superior court. He is a teacher at Corydon Central junior and senior high schools. Rumors of a relationship led school official to investigate and contact police.
The Harrison county prosecutor has stated that Hubert’s position of authority as a teacher will be taken into consideration as an exception to state statute, which sets the age of consent at 16.
“He’s held to a different standard in the eyes of the law,” said Otto Schalk, prosecutor. “There’s a trust placed in the school teachers.”
The student disclosed to police during an interview that she and Hubert were in a relationship similar to dating. Contact has been confirmed between the two via text message records and school surveillance video.
Schalk also said the school corporation has initiated termination proceedings for Hubert, who was employed with the district for more than five years.
According to court records, Hubert posted a $10,000 cash bond Monday, Dec. 15. He was released with the condition that he is not allowed to make contact with any children under the age of 18. He is due back in court in February.
