Human Remains Accidentally Donated to Goodwill
Goodwill employees in Lafayette discovered two small white boxes filled with cremated human remains while sorting through a lot of donated household items Friday, Dec. 12. Each ash-filled box was wrapped in a velvet pouch and marked with a name and date, which police were able to use to track down family members to reclaim the remains.
“I’m just happy that they did find the family,” said store manager Paula Strong. It’s fairly common for donors to drop off mystery items after cleaning out the homes of relatives, but she said this was the strangest thing she’d seen at that store. She immediately called police to ask about protocol for misplaced remains.
Lafayette police sergeant Grant Snyder said that the inclusion of the ashes with the donation was a mistake and there was nothing criminal about the incident.
