Man Arrested For Firearm Theft
Kevin M. Newcomer, 31, with addresses of 8215 E. Lakeview Drive, Syracuse, and 67996 CR 23, New Paris, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 25, on a charge of theft of a firearm.
The affidavit of probable cause, filed by Syracuse Police Officer James Layne, states on Sept. 30, a resident on North Branch Street, Syracuse, reported the theft. The resident said he left his home, at which time Kevin Newcomer was at the residence. When the owner of the home returned, Newcomer was gone and the safe door open.
Evidence at the home found Newcomer’s sunglasses on the floor, next to the safe and three unused cigarette filters. Newcomer allegedly tears filters off cigarettes before smoking them.
Missing were a Walters .32 caliber pistol, 21 American Silver Eagle dollar coins, 35 dollar coins, 50 half-dollar coins, 56 quarters and 125 dimes, all valued at $1,968.92.
Newcomer admitted to police he was at the home on Sept. 29, and that he found the safe unlocked. He also admitted removing the coins. He gave the officer an assortment of coins and bills he allegedly removed from the safe.
The victim later identified the coins, bills and reported the gun had been returned.
Newciner is being held on $1,000 surety bond.
