Buss Garners POTW Honors Again
BLOOMINGTON – Indiana freshman guard Tyra Buss has been named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Buss earns the honor for a second-straight week and shares the award with Chatrice White of Illinois.
Buss helped the Hoosiers remain perfect as IU is off to a 4-0 start for a second-straight year. In three games last week, Buss averaged 18.3 points, 4.0 steals, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 55.6 percent (20-of-36) from the field.
Against Valparaiso, Buss broke an IU freshman record with eight steals (tied for 4th among all players) in the win to go along with a game-high 22 points with four rebounds and two assists while shooting 10-of 16 from the field. In Indiana’s win over Morehead State on Nov. 21, Buss scored 16 points with six rebounds, five assists and a steal and went 3-of-5 from 3-point range. In IU’s final game of the week against Incarnate Word on Sunday, Buss had 17 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field with three steals, four boards and two assists.
The Mt. Carmel, Ill., native leads Indiana in scoring (18.3 ppg) and steals (4.8 spg) through the first four games. She is shooting 56.0 percent from the field and is averaging 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game so far this year.
Buss becomes the first IU player to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on back-to-back occasions. She is the second Hoosier to earn the award twice in the same season as Larryn Brooks did two times last season.
