Leisure Pool Celebrates 25 Years Of Growth
As Leisure Pool & Spa Supply celebrates its 25th year in business, it is also enjoying its new larger location at 1405 N. Indiana Ave., Syracuse. Both owner Tim Yoder and his son, Mark, agree the move was necessary since they were jammed in at the old office located on Main Street.
“We’ve been wanting to move to a bigger area for five years,” Yoder said, adding, “Now we need another building! The last three to five years we’ve just grown exponentially.”
In its new location, where Leisure Pool has been since May, customers can find a full range of pool- and spa-related products for everything. Additionally, the business offers commercial and residential services.
“We do commercial pools and a lot of residential pools,” Yoder said, adding a lot of people don’t know about the commercial side of the business, which caters toward pools at colleges, schools, municipalities and organizations like the YMCA.
Among their services are bacteria testing, summerization of pools and spas, weekly maintenance, equipment installation, repairs and winterization of pools and spas. Additionally, Yoder stated they have experience with ultraviolet light systems, which kills bacteria more efficiently and much quicker than other methods.
On average Yoder speculated they are on 600 commercial properties in the winter and 1,200 commercial properties in the summer. “We work at a lot of residential pools in the summer, too,” he added. “We want to grow both sides of the business.”
While many businesses were affected by the recession, Leisure Pool was very fortunate, according to Yoder, and did not experience a slowdown. In fact, the business launched a second office/warehouse in Indianapolis.
“Between the two locations, we cover most of the state,” Yoder said, noting their coverage area includes just north of Louisville, Ky., up to southern Michigan. It’s a huge jump from the time when Yoder first purchased Leisure Pool in 1989.
The gentleman, who had been operating the business since 1982, had wanted to do something else and asked Yoder to consider purchasing the business. “I said I’d take a look,” Yoder said. “And as they say, the rest is history.” Yoder added originally he had planned to sell the business after five years but ended up staying with it.
“We’re now getting ready to pass the business onto the second generation,” Yoder said, noting he has aspirations to retire in five years when he thinks Mark will be ready to take the reins.
So far, Yoder stated Mark has been very active with the commercial side of the business. Yoder described the experience of his son coming on board to be very enjoyable.
Yoder noted his daughter is also working in the industry with one of the largest distributors in the country. He stated she works in their corporate headquarters in Louisiana.
“You always have to enjoy when the kids come into the business,” he said.
