Grace’s Johnson Honored
WINONA LAKE – Dr. Darrell Johnson, chair of the sport management department at Grace College, was selected as the “Sport Management Professional of the Year” from the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD).
The Sport Management Professional of the Year Award recognizes the work of an individual who exhibits excellence in sport management education at the college/university level. Johnson was awarded during the IAHPERD Conference, held Nov. 5 in Indianapolis.
Johnson has been a member of IAHPERD for 28 years and served as state president in 1994. He is an active member of several other professional organizations including NASPE, AAPAR, IAHPERD, and NASSM. He has given presentations at numerous state and national conventions and meetings on sport management and physical education topics, and is very active in major sports events. He encourages his students to gain valuable experience by volunteering and interning at these events as well.
Some of Johnson’s recent experiences include the 2013 President’s Cup, the 2012 Super Bowl, the 2011 Big Ten Football Championship, the 2012 PGA Senior Championship, and the USGA Senior Open. As a student, he was a pitcher on the Lancer baseball team and currently holds the record for the most wins in a career and the most wins in a season. In 2009, he was inducted into the Grace College Athletic Hall of Fame.
