Concert Review: The Apache Relay In Indianapolis, Nov. 4
“We’re here every other week, seems like,” says The Apache Relay’s guitarist, Mike Harris, of playing in Indiana.
“There’s no restraining order yet,” adds guitarist, Brett Moore, with a laugh.
The band has played the Old National Centre in Indianapolis twice this fall. Once on Sept. 17, opening for Trampled By Turtles, and again this week opening for the Wild Feathers on Nov. 4.
Since releasing their latest album, The Apache Relay, the Nashville-based band has toured heavily, ironing out live arrangements for the new songs. “We have to practice harmonies a lot more,” says Harris.
“We had time to work out the kinks. It keeps getting better,” Moore says. “This is a little bit more dense musically. Now that it’s been out for awhile, it’s interesting, I’m super proud of it.”
The Apache Relay differs quite a bit from the band’s 2011 debut, American Nomad. Their self-titled was toiled over in the studio and filled with experimentation and new ideas.
While American Nomad was bursting with instant ear worms, The Apache Relay is much more of a slow burn. Repeated listens will reveal delicate details, intricate vocal harmonies and influences of everything from Doo-Wop to jazz.
“I don’t think we’ll make a record as studio-ed out,” Moore says. “Is [The Apache Relay] the definitive work of the band? I don’t think so.”
“We’re a rock ‘n’ roll band,” continues Moore. “Especially live, we’re a rock band. We’re a band that thrives on playing off each other. The stuff that has come out of us just jamming, that’s the best. I think we’re all itching to make some rock ‘n’ roll.”
But before The Apache Relay head back into the studio, they’ve got a fair amount of touring to do. They’ll be in Chicago at The Metro on Nov. 7, 20th Century Theatre in Cincinnati on Nov. 9 and The Shelter in Detroit on Nov. 11.
After that, the guys are headed to Canada. Harris and Moore said they’re excited to visit the neighbors to the north again.
So what should audiences expect at The Apache Relay‘s upcoming shows? “Right now, it’s a healthy mix of American Nomad and The Apache Relay,” Moore says. Their performance at the Deluxe in Indianapolis on Nov. 4 definitely held true to that trend.
