Warrior Pair, Fisher Net Tennis Wins
CULVER – The wait was well worth it for a trio of area high school tennis players Wednesday night.
The Wawasee No. 1 doubles team of Jake Hutchinson and Nate Haines, along with Triton No. 1 singles player Jared Fisher, each posted wins to extend their individual seasons.
The Warrior team and Fisher, competing in the individual sectional round for undefeated players in the state tournament series, had their matches postponed Tuesday due to rain.
The trio returned to Culver Academies Wednesday night and earned wins to advance.
Hutchinson and Haines defeated the Knox team of Tyler Simola-Wallingford and Jacob Albon 6-4, 6-3.
Fisher topped Hunter Gilbert of Knox 6-4, 6-2.
The Warrior duo will face the Manchester team of Brandon Scott and Noah Cain. Fisher will play Warsaw senior Sam Rice. Both of those matches are scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. back at Culver Academies.
Host Culver Military Academy claimed the regional team championship Wednesday on its home courts by topping Plymouth 4-1.
The Eagles earned the regional title with a singles sweep. Junior Sam Concannon led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior John Hunter at No. 1 singles for the hosts. Junior Chris Bilicic defeated sophomore John Gerard 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 and junior Josh Thompkins stopped junior Nate Knapp 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 3.
Culver also won at No. 2 doubles as junior Evan Dillon and freshman Ian Smith beat sophomore Nick Felke and junior Braydon Davidson 6-1, 6-3.
Plymouth’s lone point came from its outstanding No. 1 doubles team. The duo of seniors Ryan Johnson and Max Holloway topped juniors William Bilicic and Brian Tao 6-0, 6-7 (6-7), 6-1.
Culver Military Academy will return to its home courts for semi state play Saturday at 10 a.m. The Eagles, who are now 12-7, will face either Crown Point or Munster.
The Pilgrims, who won the NLC title at 7-0 this season, finish at 16-2. Both of Plymouth’s losses were to CMA.
