Wawasee Sports Wrap – Oct. 4
Storms knocked out the scheduled date between Wawasee and Plymouth on the soccer pitch Thursday, but the host Pilgrims came back with a vengeance Saturday.
Playing to a 0-0 standstill until the 2:34 mark remaining in the first half Thursday evening, Plymouth erupted for four goals once play resumed Saturday to defeat Wawasee, 4-1, in varsity boys soccer.
Wawasee’s lone goal came from Alex Doll.
The result leaves Wawasee at 4-7-5 overall and 1-5-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference heading into the Plymouth Sectional. Play in the sectional begins Monday when Warsaw and Culver Academy meet at 6 p.m. Wawasee will play in Wednesday’s first game, starting at 5 p.m., with Plymouth taking on the Warsaw-Academy winner in game two. The sectional final will be Saturday at 6 p.m.
Tigers Edge Warriors
Warsaw won a thriller on the JV football gridiron Saturday morning, beating Wawasee 13-12 in Warsaw.
Stephon Miller was huge for the Warriors, catching a 68-yard touchdown pass and also picking off a Warsaw pass and sprinting 98 yards for a score.
Paul Mendoza was a beast on defense, making four tackles, two sacks and forcing two fumbles. Michael Katzer added eight tackles.
Statistics for Warsaw were not immediately available.
Wawasee will host Elkhart Memorial while NorthWood will visit Warsaw, both games next Saturday.
Ladies Split At Dunes Tourney
Wawasee went 2-2 in its action at the Dunes Junior Varsity Volleyball Tournament at Rolling Prairie Saturday.
Wawasee beat Marquette 25-14, 25-9 and Bishop Noll 25-24, 25-19 while dropping contests to Wheeler 25-16, 25-20 and Pioneer 25-22, 12-25, 10-15.
For Wawasee (9-11 overall) Kabrea Rostochak had 23 digs, 17 kills, 10 aces and two blocks to lead the team for the day. Skylar Janda added 31 digs, 11 kills and nine aces while Hannah-Marie Lamle chipped in 11 kills and three blocks.
The Lady Warriors will return to action Tuesday when West Noble comes calling.
