Wawasee Sports Wrap – Oct. 2
Wawasee hung around for a while with Northern Lakes Conference soccer rival NorthWood Thursday evening, but fell apart in a 7-1 loss.
The regular season finale and as well as final home game for the Lady Warriors had NorthWood jump out to a 3-0 lead before Sarah Lancaster scored her fifth goal of the season with two minutes before the halftime whistle.
NorthWood brought the pressure in the second half, netting four goals to pull away. Wawasee ends the season 0-7 in the NLC, and have not won a conference game since 2011, spanning 21 games.
“We are very disappointed in our performance tonight,” said Wawasee skipper Doug Heinisch. “We could not control the ball on a wet field. We should have done better. We will regroup and be ready for sectional.”
The Wawasee junior varsity wrapped up its season with a 1-0 loss to NorthWood.
The varsity (2-14) will face Plymouth in the first round of the Warsaw Girls Soccer Sectional Tuesday, a 6 p.m. start. NorthWood will face Warsaw in the first game Thursday, a 5 p.m. start, with the Wawasee-Plymouth winner meeting Culver Academy in the second game Thursday. The Warsaw Girls Soccer Sectional final will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
Lightning Halts Boys Match
Wawasee and Plymouth were not able to complete the boys soccer match started Thursday. The game was scoreless with 2:34 left in the first half when lightning halted play. Weather conditions would not permit a continuation, leaving the match unfinished.
Immediate word on a make-up was not given.
The night began with the junior varsity match which ended in a 2-1 Plymouth win.
Should the game not be made up, Wawasee will conclude its regular season 4-6-6 and 1-4-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference. The Warriors will meet NorthWood in Wednesday’s first semi-final game of the Plymouth Boys Soccer Sectional. Warsaw and Culver Academy play in Monday’s opener, with Plymouth meeting Monday’s winner. The Plymouth Boys Soccer Sectional championship is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.
Memorial Rolls In Volleyball
Wawasee’s struggles in the Northern Lakes Conference continued Thursday night after a 3-0 volleyball loss to visiting Elkhart Memorial.
The Lady Chargers had little trouble in posting a 25-18, 25-15, 25-10 winner over the Lady Warriors.
Statistics for Wawasee were slim pickens, With Alli Ousley only hoisting 10 assists, with Becca Anderson, Seaquinn Bright, Addison Ayres and Meghan Fretz all collecting three kills. Aly Anderson had 13 digs in the snappy match that lasted just over an hour.
“(We have) four matches left to improve. This team is good enough when we put it all together,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips, whose team falls to 15-13 overall and 0-5 in the NLC.
Memorial had similar success in the JV contest, winning 25-19, 25-13. Stat leaders for Wawasee included Taylor Mock with six digs, one kill and one assist and Ashley Beer with five digs, two assists and a kill.
Wawasee will get back at it Tuesday with home contests against West Noble.
Rockies Roll In Freshman Game
Jacob Hand had a nice game for the Warriors, but Plymouth was solid in a 32-12 victory over Wawasee in freshman football.
Hand returned a kick-off 80 yards for a touchdown, caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Wegener and picked off two passes.
Wawasee (2-4) will host Warsaw next Thursday.
