Whitko Stays Unbeaten In TRC
WABASH – The winning ways for the Whitko football team continued Friday night.
The Wildcats remained unbeaten in league play by posting a big 27-7 win at Northfield in Three Rivers Conference action.
Whitko took another step towards winning a conference championship for the second straight year.
The Wildcats made it four straight wins to improve to 4-2 overall and move to 4-0 in the TRC. Whitko is tied atop the league standings with Rochester, who they shared the league crown with in 2013. The Zebras also moved to 4-0 in conference play Friday night by blanking TRC foe Manchester 27-0.
The Wildcats, who scored the final 27 points of the contest Friday night, used their formula for success again in topping the Norsemen.
Whitko ran the ball 50 times for 265 yards in the victory. The Wildcats out gained Northfield, now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the TRC, 313-161 in total yards.
Northfield took a 7-0 lead after the opening period. The Wildcats trailed 7-6 at halftime after a one-yard touchdown run by Tanner Hughes.
Whitko took the lead for good in the third period of play as Hughes scored on a two-yard run. The Wildcats then got a pair of touchdown runs from quarterback Garrett Elder, one from 12 yards and the final from 47 yards out to complete the win.
The 1-2 punch of Hughes and Elder continued to run well. Hughes had 25 carries for 103 yards and Elder ran it 12 times for 112 yards.
Garrett Smilty had five rushes for 49 yards for the Wildcats.
The Whitko defense once again was up to the challenge as they only allowed eight first downs. Zach Baughman had 13 tackles for the winners.
Whitko hosts North Miami in TRC action next Friday night in South Whitley.
