Warsaw Sports Wrap – Sept. 9
The Warsaw boys tennis team got back on track in a big way Tuesday night.
Nic Jansen led the way as the Tigers blanked host Northridge 5-0 in Northern Lakes Conference play in Middlebury.
Senior Jansen posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Simon Grevengood to lead the Tiger onslaught.
Senior Sam Rice and David Homme also cruised to big singles wins for coach Rick Orban’s squad. Rice topped Landon Arnold 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 and Homme beat James Dugle 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3.
The Tigers swept the doubles courts in straight sets too.
The Warsaw No. 1 duo of Christopher Herendeen and Caleb Ray topped Ted Fields and Austen Schmidt 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
The Tigers No. 2 doubles duo of Cole Baker and Justin Stout completed the shutout win by downing Sam Hoover and Aadrash Patel 6-1, 6-1.
Warsaw improves its varsity mark to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the NLC.
Warsaw won the junior varsity action by a 5-1 count.
Winning for the JV Tigers in singles play were Andrew Gauger, Colton Lind and Brandon Chan. Winning in doubles action were the teams of Ryan Wettschurack and Hudson Snyder and Hayden Steger and Keeton Bartol.
Warsaw plays at Fort Wayne Canterbury on Thursday.
Soccer Ladies Edge Memorial
The Warsaw girls soccer team came up with a key conference win at Elkhart Memorial Tuesday night.
Brooklyn Jackson provided the game winning goal in the 69th minute to lift her team to a 4-3 victory in Northern Lakes Conference play.
Jackson’s tally, off an assists from Mariah Rivera, enabled the Tigers to win after the hosts had rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force a tie.
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead on goal by Alexx Freshour in the eighth minute. Warsaw answered with three scores before intermission as Megan Kratzsch tied the game and then Liz Van Wormer scored twice for a 3-1 halftime lead.
Memorial tied the game on second-half goals by Freshour and Hope Canaan.
Warsaw got assists from Brenna Shipley, Clair Snodgrass and Jackson in the win.
The Tigers outshot Memorial 19-9 in the victory.
Warsaw improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in NLC play. Memorial drops to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Warsaw won the junior varsity match 2-0. Kennedy Patton tallied two goals for the Tigers.
Warsaw plays at NLC foe Concord Thursday night with the JV match at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity contest.
Boys Soccer Falls To Chargers
The struggles in conference play continued for the Warsaw boys soccer team Tuesday night.
The host Tigers dropped a 4-1 decision to Elkhart Memorial in Northern Lakes Conference action at WCHS.
Warsaw, ranked No. 16 in Class 2-A, falls to 0-2-1 in NLC action.
Memorial came out strong with three first-half goals to take control. Jaime Garcia scored in the seventh minute for the Crimson Chargers. Daniel Brummet, who assisted on the first goal, scored in the 13th minute for a 2-0 lead. Garcia then scored again to make it 3-0.
Warsaw’s lone goal came off the foot of Caleb Klusman in the 60th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Brummet closed out the scoring with his second goal of the night in the 71st minute.
Memorial, which improves to 7-0-3 overall and 2-0 in the NLC, had an 11-6 edge in shots. Peyton Long had seven saves for the Tigers.
Memorial won the junior varsity game 3-1.
Warsaw returns to action by hosting Carroll on Saturday.
