Grace Tennis Team Topped
WINONA LAKE – The Grace College men’s tennis team was tripped up 6-3 against Indiana Wesleyan in Crossroads League play on Tuesday.
The Lancers fell into second place in the league standings with a 4-1 record. Grace still has a match to come against league-leading Marian on Sept. 16.
“This was a tough match to swallow. We split singles, but to IWU’s credit they fought back to win doubles,” said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. “We let a few matches get away from us, and IWU’s tough, gritty play had a lot to do with that. We will definitely use this to get stronger.”
Grace was up at the break at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but the Wildcats rallied from behind to win both by the score of 8-5. Indiana Wesleyan also won at No. 3 doubles 8-3.
Daniel Sanchez picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles for Grace’s first point. Jose Marval won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Ricardo Bedon was victorious 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. The Wildcats got each of the final three singles’ matches in straight sets.
On a positive note for the Lancers, Sanchez, Marval and Bedon each maintained their undefeated singles’ record to the 2014 season.
The Lancers will take a break from regular competition to play in the ITA Regional Tournament starting on Thursday. Grace’s next CL match is the crucial matchup at Marian on Sept. 16.
