She was born Jan. 24, 1920, on the family farm north of Nappanee, to Joseph A. and Loretta M. (Yoder) Chamberlin. Martha was married to Stanley W. Berger on Dec. 29, 1946. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Berger was a lifetime resident of Nappanee until moving to Vincennes in 2007. She was a 1938 graduate of Nappanee High School. She graduated from North Central College in Naperville, Ill., in 1942 and received her masters degree at St. Francis College in Fort Wayne. She had taught school in Millersburg, Ind., Bourbon, Ind., and LaPaz, Ind, schools. She then taught in the WaNee School system until her retirement in 1983. She was a longtime member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Dorcas Circle and the Church Choir. She was also a charter member of the Cable Stitch Club, Indiana Teachers Association, and a former member of the Lady Lions. Martha was very active with the Nappanee High School Class of 1938 get-togethers.
She is survived by her daughters: Nancy (John) Mathis, Vincennes; Diane (Brad) Foley, Eugene, Ore.; grandchildren: Laura M. (Justin) Burdick, Columbus, Ind.; Kathryn M. (David) Killion, Birmingham, Ala.; Carolyn B. Foley, Portland, Ore.; David B. Foley, Ann Arbor, Mich.; and great-granddaughters: Ruth M. Burdick and Anna Kathryn Killion.
She was preceded in death by brothers: Howard and Earl ‘Joe’ Chamberlin; and sisters: Mary Strang and Ruth Berger.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, at Thompson-Lengacher and Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, Nappanee United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at the church with Reverend Jim Davidson officiating. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Nappanee United Methodist Church, the Vincennes United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Hospice in Vincennes.
