Warsaw CC Ladies Impress In Opener
HUNTiNGTON NORTH – The Warsaw girls cross country program opened its’ 2014 season with an impressive showing Saturday in the Huntington North Invitational.
Sophomore Allison Miller led the way in the varsity event as the Tigers captured a second-place team finish. No. 7 Carroll won the girls’ title with a team score of 38. Coach Matt Campbell’s Warsaw squad placed second in the 20-team field with a score of 91.
Miller, who was the top runner last season for the State Finalist Tigers, finished in sixth place overall in a time of 19:43.4.
Junior Hannah Dawson earned a 12th place finish for Warsaw in a time of 20:20.1. Junior Emma Hayward was 16th overall in a time of 20:40.2 with junior Brooke Rhodes 21st in 20:53.9 and sophomore Anna Craig 36th in 21:54.9 to complete the top five varsity scoring for Warsaw.
Junior Claire Kehler was 47th overall in a time of 22:43.2 for the Tigers and senior Hannah Thompson placed 50th in 22:51.4.
The Warsaw junior varsity contingent returned home after earning the championship Saturday.
Twin sophomore sisters Lauren and Charlene Orr led the way for Warsaw with a 1-2 finish in the JV race. Lauren took first place overall in a time of 21:37.4 with Charlene second in a time of 21:55.1.
The Warsaw JV posted a team score of 42, edging past Carroll (46) to win the 10-team event.
Freshman Mia Beckham was fourth overall for the JV Tigers in 22:27.8 with senior Emma Lemon 12th in 23:42.8 and freshman Meredith Phipps 26th in 24:51.7. Jamina Fugate was 35th in 25:34.5 and Michaela Roark 36th in 25:39.9 to complete the top seven for Warsaw.
The Tigers will compete in the DeKalb Classic Aug. 30 before hosting their own Tiger Invitational on Sept. 2 at WCHS.
