Summer Reading Was a Success
The Syracuse Library’s children’s department has finished eight weeks of reading in which hundreds of children read library books for weekly prizes. Families experienced 16 hours of hands-on science entertainment. Many children came to read to both Echo the dog and the Wednesday volunteers. The following businesses and organizations contributed to the many opportunities to help children read this summer: Burger King, Dairy Queen, Kiwanis, Lakeland Eagles Auxiliary #3760, Lakeland F.O.E #3760, McDonald’s, New Market, Penguin Point, Pizza Hut, Revolving Closet, Sands Accounting, Shopko, Smoker Craft, State Farm, Syracuse Hardware, Syracuse Wawasee Rotary, The Papers, and Women of Today. Thank you for the support.
Fossils, Minerals, and Artifacts
Jim Carpenter is bringing his collection artifacts for a presentation and hands-on sharing experience at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. All ages are welcome to attend. Carpenter is a master naturalist in a relatively new program through the DNR. The members take a test and stay active by taking classes and doing community service.
True Plane Wreck Adventure
The adult book club is talking about the true World War II story of a plane that crashed in the jungle of New Guinea killing all aboard but two G.I.s and a WAC. Lost in Shangri-La, by Mitchell Zuckoff, is a tale of an adventure where Americans discover a remote and inaccessible land inhabited by warring tribes. The rescue was big news at the time, but Zuckoff also follows the degradation of the natives’ life-values after contact with the outside world.
The book club, One Book, One Hour, meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month. The library is happy to help any interested readers get a copy of the book or audio-book. The library may be reached at 574-457-3022.
