Fort Wayne Passes ‘Right To Work’ Bill
According to Inside INdiana Business, the Fort Wayne City Council has approved a measure modeled after the state’s “right to work” law for some city employees. Councilman Mitch Harper proposed the ordinance, which he says aligns city policy with the law passed two years ago by Indiana lawmakers.
John Perlich, the spokesman for Mayor Tom Henry, says the office is still in the process of reviewing the action taken by the city council, so there is no immediate word on what action he will take with the measure.
Mitch Harper tells Inside INdiana Business the bill brings the municipal code for public employees in line with the Indiana code concerning private and state workers.
Harper says, “It should help convey that the city council of Indiana’s second largest city is affirming a desire to treat our workers fairly and that a municipal worker’s employment and continued employment will not be subject to discrimination if the individual decides not to become a member of a labor organization. That is the same pledge we give those who do decide to join a labor organization. This bill makes those rights apply mutually.”
