Impaired Boating Targeted By DNR
Indiana Conservation Officers acting on complaints from boaters on James Lake — commonly referred to as “Little Tippy Lake” — held a targeted enforcement operation on the sandbar over the holiday weekend. Officers were searching for impaired or intoxicated boat operators and minors consuming alcoholic beverages.
Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by officers from the State Excise Police. As a result of the day-long operation, which took place on Saturday July 5, 16 minors were issued summons to appear for minor consumption and possession of alcoholic beverages.
Additionally, Nicholas Ponsler, 27, of South Bend, was jailed on a charge of operating a watercraft with a BAC over 0.08%.
Also, Indiana Conservation Officer Tyler Brock responded to and is investigating a boating accident that occurred on Tippecanoe Lake over the weekend.
Although the DNR is not releasing any information, ICO Jonathan Boyd of District 1 Headquarters in Syracuse, says no criminal charges have yet been filed in the case.
Indiana Conservation Officers say they are dedicated to keeping Hoosier waterways safe for all to enjoy. It is hoped by working with the boating public that enforcement efforts such as this will prevent alcohol-related incidents from occurring on our state’s scenic waterways.
If you suspect someone of impaired or intoxicated boat operation you may call the Indiana Conservation Officers dispatch center at 1-812-837-9536. In an emergency, always dial 911 first and an Indiana Conservation Officer will be dispatched along with other emergency personnel.
As the captain of your boat, it is your duty to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves responsibly while aboard your boat. Always carry a properly fitting wearable personal flotation device for each person on board and make sure they are easily accessible. Everyone on board must know where to find them in case of an accident. Officers strongly encourage everyone while recreating on or near the water to always wear a personal flotation device.
