(EDITOR’S NOTE: This is Part I or a two-part series.)
In order to have the life, career and business success you desire you need three things. There are three ‘must haves.’ You need people, time and money. Whether you are seeking to become a better husband, father, wife, mother, friend, employee or employer you need – people, time and money.
I believe in order to attain your greatest achievements in your professional life you need to always start with your personal life. Your long term professional success can never rise above the level of your personal and family success – never! You need a great personal foundation to build your professional foundation on.
We need people to challenge us. It is a great gift to have friends who will ask you about your life, your decisions and your actions. We need to have people in our lives who will call us out when we are getting off track. We must have people we trust who can ask us tough questions and give us straight and sometimes tough advice.
We also need people to encourage us. We all need cheerleaders. My wife is my biggest cheerleader. She is always encouraging me. (She would look great in a cheerleading outfit too!) My best friend is always telling me, ‘You’re good enough, you’re smart enough and dog gone it, people like you.’
We must take the time to enjoy the people and gifts we have been given. It could be time spent fishing with your best friend, playing with your children in the park, or just taking a walk. Our family always seems to be busy going here, there and everywhere. We recently took a few hours to grill out and then play some volleyball. Since we don’t have a net we improvised and played over our chain link fence in the backyard. The point is – we spent quality time together.
We need time to think and dream. We can get so busy with work and normal life we forget to take time to just think and dream. (I am still trying to figure out what ‘normal’ is by the way.) You need time to think about what you want your life to look like. Time to dream about the life, family and relationships you want.
I love cutting my grass and my neighbor’s grass. My neighbor is in her seventies and cannot cut her grass. This is an area where I just volunteer my time. She gives me a little money for gas, but I don’t charge her a penny. I have been doing it for years now. It is an area to just serve someone else and it gives me about two and a half hours of time to think and dream.
Zig Ziglar says, “Money is not the most important thing in life, but it is a close second to oxygen on the ‘gotta have it’ scale.” Money is just a resource, or tool. Money not only pays your bills, but it is there to help build some life-long memories. It can take care of a great vacation, the things needed for grilling out with your neighbors, or just sharing an ice cream cone with your kiddos.
What you love, you will spend money on. If you love fishing or clothes, you spend your money on those things. Spend money on your family and friends – after all, you love them. You don’t have to spend money a huge amount of money on a steak dinner at a restaurant, but you could simply grill some hot dogs and invite your neighbors. Build relationship and memories.
People, time and money are must haves in your personal life. Next week I will share why they are a must have in your professional life as well.
