An Elkhart-based audio components supplier will play a significant role in one of the world’s largest sporting events. Crown Audio is supplying amplifiers and speakers to nine of the 12 stadiums hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which starts today in Brazil.

Senior Director of Marketing and Engineering Marc Kellom says the company’s experience in supplying professional sporting venues throughout the United States helped land the multi-million dollar deal. Connecticut-based Harman International Industries, which acquired Crown Audio in 2000, employs about 300 in Elkhart.

Harman says its products have been used at other major events, including the Super Bowl, Grammys, Oscars and presidential inaugurations. High-profile entertainers who have used the company’s technology include Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen.

The World Cup deal was also helped by Harman’s acquisition of a Brazilian audio company a few years ago. Kellom says the contract is a positive reflection of the Elkhart plant’s work force, which is asked to make products for events where “failure is not an option.”

He says the plant has built a reputation for being able to deliver in demanding situations.
