Chargers Add Regional Title To List
ELKHART – The lengthy list of firsts for the Elkhart Memorial girls tennis team got a little longer Wednesday night.
The Crimson Chargers claimed the program’s first-ever regional championship by besting Angola 4-1 at Elkhart Central.
Memorial, now a perfect 17-0 on the season, advances to the Fort Wayne Concordia Semistate on Saturday. The Chargers will meet either Marion or Pendleton Heights at 10 a.m. Marion plays Pendleton Heights tonight in the Marion Regional final.
Memorial, coached by Alex Holtz, has now won the program’s first sectional and regional titles to go with the first Northern Lakes Conference regular season, tournament and overall championships this spring. The undefeated season is also a first for the program.
The Chargers wasted no time Wednesday.
Freshman standout Krystal Grubb won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Corinn Whittaker won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
The Chargers claimed the title as its No. 1 doubles team of Taelor Gross and Haley Stouder won 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Taylor Freedline, who claimed the deciding point on Tuesday in a 3-2 regional semifinal win over Fairfield, won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The No. 2 doubles duo of Hannah Dillman and Mady Robison lost 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 Wednesday.
