On Monday, I spoke at the North Webster Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony. I have had the honor of speaking around the world, but there is something very special about Monday. I got the honor of talking about our heroes.
You may ask what this has to do with success in life, career or business. Without the sacrifices of our heroes, we would never have the freedom to pursue our dreams and goals. Below is part of what I shared:
“We stand here in the solemn cemetery where over 135 local heroes are laid to rest. They range from the Spanish American War through today’s battles. We honor their lives, their sacrifices and their memory by being here today.
“We remember all our heroes. Some gave their lives for the price of freedom. Others have come home wounded in body or spirit. We salute and honor those who paid the ultimate price for our God ordained freedom. We salute and honor all those who have served in the armed forces and are still with us today.
“I have walked the paths along Omaha Beach and the military cemetery in Normandy, France. I think of my time there and looking at the 9387 crosses and stars of David. The heroes we honor today were not heroes because they had no fear, but rather in spite of fear charged forward – for God and country.
“What can we do to give honor to those who have given such a great sacrifice? I believe we can continue to stand for what they sacrificed for – God and country. We can take a stand to say we are ONE NATION UNDER GOD. We can honor and memorialize our fallen heroes by continuing to make sure the principles and values our country was founded on still flourish today – liberty and freedom.
“Our heroes were not afraid to put on a uniform and proudly proclaim they serve the greatest nation this world has ever known. It is the greatest nation because of the principles and values woven into the very fabric of our country. We stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that all men a created equal. We stand and will shout from the mountain tops for the world to know that the United States of America is that shining city on the hill. It is a beacon of hope and freedom for others to see.
“We can further honor our fallen heroes, those who have served and those who are still serving by standing together as one nation. We need to regain the sense of community and a nation united. It is hard for some of us to truly understand the bond of brotherhood and camaraderie those who have served together feel. I think I came to understand this as best I could when I was in Hawaii at the Pearl Harbor Memorial.
“One of the tour guides said some of the survivors of the USS Arizona are so bonded with their fallen ship mates they do something astounding when they finally pass away. They ask for special permission to be reunited with their ship and shipmates. When they pass away their ashes are put in an urn and Navy divers bring those ashes down to the USS Arizona. This is what unity and having a common bond is all about. We can honor our heroes by being bonded to our fellow Americans in the cause of liberty and freedom.
“Today, we honor all those who have lost their lives in service to a grateful nation. We honor those who have served and now live within our communities. We honor those who are still serving at home and abroad.
We honor all of heroes for their service – FOR GOD AND COUNTRY!”
