School will be out for the summer next week and soon parents will hear the familiar lament, “I’m bored!”
The North Webster Public Library’s Summer Reading Program not only keeps kids entertained, it prevents “summer reading loss” and makes them better prepared to start school in the fall. Plus, studies indicate that kids who read for fun outperform those who don’t. All the more reason to sign your child up for the Library’s Summer Reading Program starting June 2.
We have reading clubs for kids ages birth through 18 with prizes, lots of fun activities, and special events throughout the summer. Stop by the Youth Services Desk for details and a schedule of summer events.
Besides signing up for Summer Reading, the teens will want to catch a free movie on Thursday, June 5, at 4:30 p.m. The library will be showing a sci-fi comedy about a teenager who is sent back to 1955 in a time machine invented by a slightly mad scientist. The movie is for grades 6-12 only and rated PG.
The Adults Services Department is bustling next week as well. Since Voyager Book Club did not meet in May due to Memorial Day, the group will meet Monday, June 2, at 10 a.m. to share and discuss books of short stories they’ve each read.
Voyager Book Club focuses on a specific genre each month, allowing participants to read any book they choose within that category. Later in the month, on June 23, the group will read and discuss romance books.
The weight loss support group, called Lose It @ The Library, also meets on Monday, June 2, at 5:30 p.m. for their weekly confidential weigh-in and then will exercise by walking the corridors of the North Webster Community Center.
If you enjoy creating things, sign up for the Make and Take Card Class on Thursday, June 5, at 10 a.m. Hope Beezley will show participants how to make their own original greeting cards. There is always a lot of fun and friendly chatter going on in this lively group. There is a $7 class fee, and all the supplies are provided. Sign up at the Front Desk or call 574-8734-7122.
The Herb Lady Janette Stackhouse will focus on culinary creations in her popular Hooked on Herbs Class on Saturday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. She will demonstrate the many ways herbs can be used in cooking and will have food samples for everyone to taste. No advance registration is required to take this free class. Just join us for an interesting and tasty time.
Learn how to make a cute summer wreath décor out of flip-flops at the Flip-Flop Wreath Workshop on Tuesday, June 10, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bring five pairs of same size child-size flip-flops and the rest of the supplies are included in the $5 class fee. Advance registration is needed, so sign up for the workshop at the Front Desk or call 574-834-7122. A sample of a Flip-Flop Wreath is on display at the NWPL.
While in the library, stop by the “Check It Out” station near the front desk and play the Author Match Game. Match the authors to the opening lines of their books and get entered in a prize drawing held June 16.
If you’re a summer resident with a vacation home in Tippecanoe Township, you may qualify for a free library card. Also if you have an Evergreen card from your home library, you can use it at the North Webster Library as well.
