Memorial Tops Tigers
WARSAW – The Warsaw baseball team wrapped up its conference season with a 5-4 loss to Elkhart Memorial Thursday night.
The Crimson Chargers, who beat the Tigers 4-2 earlier in the season, earned a share of the Northern Lakes Conference title with the league win.
Coach Scott Rost’s team scored three runs in the fifth inning and a pair in the sixth for the win. Memorial improves to 15-10-1 overall and finishes at 10-4 in the NLC to tie NorthWood atop the league standings.
Winning pitcher Jake Tucker led the 10-hit attack for the Crimson Chargers with three hits. Daniel Asbury had a big game with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Scottie Clark also had two hits for the winners.
Warsaw, which was outhit 10-6, scored two runs in the fifth and single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings.
Dean Katris had a triple and an RBI to lead the Tigers. Caleb Moneyheffer had a double and drove home a run and Peter Shepherd had a hit and an RBI for Warsaw.
Zach Witt took the pitching loss for Warsaw, which has lost nine of its last 10 games.
Warsaw will host its own Tiger Tournament Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
The Warsaw junior varsity mashed Memorial 12-1 Thursday. Braxton Tennet and Henry Howard each had two hits for the winners. Marcello Rodriguez earned the pitching win as the JV Tiges improved to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in the NLC.
The Warsaw C team beat Goshen 16-6 on Wednesday. Jordan Steffensmeier had three hits, including a home run for the Tigers. Kenton Cornell got the pitching win. The C team is now 4-1 and hosts Wabash Friday at 5 p.m.
