Wawasee Sports Wrap – May 21
For the second time this season, Concord’s Rae Ann Miller had the magic potion.
Miller threw a two-hitter at Wawasee Wednesday in a 5-1 victory for Concord in Dunlap. The dynamic pitcher, who shut Wawasee out on a three-hitter earlier this month, was again electric striking out seven and walking just two.
By the time Danielle Gunkel drove in Alli Ousley with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, Concord had already built a 5-0 lead for Miller. Ousley had reached base by doubling to lead off the frame.
Rae Ann Miller, Jenny Miller and Sabrina Scherer all had two hits, with Scherer and Jenny Miller both doubling in the contest. McKenzie Loge added two runs scored and a stolen base.
Amber Lemberg picked up the loss, giving up eight hits and striking out seven, but was the victim of defensive miscues, allowing just one earned run among the five Concord scored.
Wawasee falls to 17-8 overall and 8-5 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Concord wraps up NLC play 12-2 overall.
The Wawasee JV pushed its mark to 21-0 on the season with an 8-4 win against Concord.
The Lady Warriors pounded out 14 hits, led by Kayleigh Rhodes’ three rips. Four other Wawasee batters had two hits.
Hannah Haines earned the victory with seven innings of seven-hit, nine strikeout ball.
A Wawasee win Thursday at Northridge would affect the conference ledger as Northridge is currently 12-1, the Lady Minutemen now 12-2.
Minutemen Shut Out Warriors
Concord were sharp as road dogs Wednesday, shutting out Wawasee 3-0 in Syracuse.
Wawasee (8-14, 3-10 NLC) managed just three hits, two of which came from Drew Anderson and Andrew Milligan had the other, all three mere singles.
Jordan Currie threw a decent game, holding Concord to five hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. Currie struck out three and walked one.
Wawasee’s JV found themselves in a slugfest with Concord, with the Minutemen coming out on top 13-11 Wednesday afternoon in Syracuse.
The Minutemen scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held Wawasee (12-6) scoreless for the escape.
Aaron Beer and Rylan Kuhn combined for five hits while Harrison Shortill bashed a three-run homer.
